3Frederick Sound, Southeast Alaska

Located in Alaska’s Inside Passage, Frederick Sound offers clear views of the sky and is far away from city lights, making it one of the best places to see the Northern Lights in Alaska. The sound is also home to numerous cruise ships that offer special Northern Lights viewing excursions.

During the peak of the aurora season, which runs from August to April, there are almost 24 hours of darkness, providing ample opportunity to view the lights. Even during the daytime, the sun reflects off the snow and ice, creating a beautiful backdrop for the aurora borealis.
