8Hofskirkja Turf Church (Iceland)

Though not technically a house, Hofskirkja is one of Iceland’s few remaining turf churches, blending harmoniously with its surroundings.

Its grassy roof makes it look as though it has sprouted from the earth itself. Located in a quiet valley surrounded by towering mountains, this church-house is a symbol of the traditional Icelandic architecture that once provided shelter from the harsh elements.

Why it’s lonely: Nestled in the Icelandic wilderness, surrounded by nothing but mountains and open skies.
