In ancient Rome, how someone shuffled off their mortal coil mattered as much as how they bore it through life. Just as one could live a virtuous life, so could one die a virtuous death, and few examples of admirable, awful, shameful and painful deaths have come down in as much detail as those of the Roman emperors.

Populated by millions of tourists every year, it can be hard to imagine how normal people may have lived here. The clopping of horses as carriages moved past. The sounds of ancient languages at storefronts, restaurants, residential homes. Without these elements, Pompeii feels like a ghost town.

The ancient Roman legions played a key role in the rapid expansion of contemporary Roman civilization. Their disciplined fighting tactics played a crucial role in crushing their opponents in battles. It also helped that the Roman infantry came equipped with an armory that allowed for quick offenses and provided a solid defense. Ironically, however, the standards and discipline of ancient Roman military tactics were absent in their military armor and attire.
