8See the trulli of Alberobello

Alberobello is famous for its trulli: tiny limestone houses topped by conical roofs. Built without mortar, the houses mostly date from the 14th century, but the building technique has been used since ancient times.

They’re a common sight across southern Puglia, but Alberobello has the greatest concentration with more than 1,500. This Unesco world heritage site is one of the most popular places to visit in Puglia — and can get uncomfortably busy in high season. Visit late in the day, ideally in spring or autumn, for the most rewarding experience. Look out for the Trullo Sovrano, the only two-levelled house.
