5Ranko Gave Kody a Home Where Her Wheelchair Wasn’t a Problem
Kody arrived at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary after an accident left her paralyzed in the hind end. Her disability meant she needed additional help, including a custom-made wheelchair.
But Kody’s personality quickly made her stand out.
The energetic dog became especially attached to longtime volunteer Ranko Fukuda. Rather than seeing Kody’s wheelchair and medical needs as reasons not to adopt her, Ranko saw the affectionate dog underneath them.
Kody eventually went home with Ranko, where her wheels became part of everyday life rather than something that defined her. She learned to move around independently and became famous for enthusiastically wheeling herself toward people when she wanted attention.
Her story is a reminder that adopting a disabled animal can require additional preparation, but disability does not necessarily prevent a pet from having an active, happy life.
