6Phyllis Took in a Paralyzed Puppy and Helped Her Walk Again
Spearmint Sally was only a puppy when an accident left her hind end completely paralyzed. Veterinary examinations found nerve damage, although no broken bones, giving her caregivers hope that some movement might eventually return.
Sally began an intensive rehabilitation program that included laser therapy, acupuncture, massages and hydrotherapy.
Her foster caregiver, Phyllis Meyer-Parthemore, took the commitment particularly seriously. Sally received physical therapy exercises twice a day, including range-of-motion exercises and activities designed to encourage her legs to move again.
She also used a wheelchair as her strength developed.
Over time, tiny movements began returning to Sally’s hind legs. During hydrotherapy, therapists helped her practice walking patterns while the water supported some of her weight.
Eventually, Sally began standing and taking steps independently.
Her first adoption did not work out because her special medical needs required a more stable situation. Phyllis welcomed her back, and the two eventually became a permanent family. Sally continued physical therapy but also returned to doing what every young dog wants to do: playing, chasing toys and being part of the household.
