Years of eruptions have rendered the soil around Mount Etna extremely fertile and good for cultivation. Citrus fruits, grapes and vegetables are grown here.

Farming on Mount Etna is however a risk as an eruption can occur at any time thus loss of the crop. The mountain’s volatility also discourages any mechanization- crops are thus grown by hand, which is argued to be the best way.
