4Sede Vacante: The Interregnum Period

The period between the pope’s death and the election of his successor is called Sede Vacante. During this time, the usual governance of the Vatican is suspended. The Camerlengo assumes temporary administrative duties but cannot make major decisions or appointments.

The College of Cardinals takes center stage. While cardinals from around the world begin arriving in Rome, no one can begin preparations for a new papal election until all cardinals are officially present. During this time, Vatican flags are flown at half-mast, and official documents are temporarily stamped with the Sede Vacante coat of arms—a gold umbrella and crossed keys.
