In the historically significant town of Djenné, looming over the neighborhoods of traditional low-rise adobe houses, is one of the world’s most unique religious buildings, the Great Mosque of Djenné.

Little is known about the original mosque, which is thought to have been built with local material in the 13th century when Islam was flourishing in the area.
