Accessed via a somewhat challenging hike, Lago di Sorapis rewards the intrepid with views that seem conjured from a dream.
The lake is renowned for its distinctive milky turquoise waters, a result of the limestone particles that reflect the sunlight. Surrounded by rugged peaks, the lake’s otherworldly color contrasts sharply with the stark white of the Dolomites and the green of the alpine flora, creating a scene so surreal it must be seen to be believed. Despite its popularity, there’s a hushed reverence here, as if nature itself commands a moment of silence to truly appreciate this wonder.
Painting is an ancient medium and even with the introduction of photography, film and digital technology, it still has remained a persistent mode of expression. We, of course, have our opinion of what makes the grade and we present them here in our list of the best paintings of all time.
