Surprisingly, pepperoni, as it is known in the United States, does not have the same meaning in Italy. In Italian, “peperoni” refers to bell peppers, not the cured meat used on pizza. While cured sausages are used in various Italian dishes, the American-style pepperoni pizza is not a traditional Italian creation.
