8The Rivalry of Bernini and Borromini

Piazza Navona features the Church of Sant’Agnese in Agone, designed by Francesco Borromini, a rival of Bernini.

Legend has it that Bernini’s placement of the Fountain of the Four Rivers was intentionally designed to face away from Borromini’s church in a gesture of rivalry. The two eminent artists clashed frequently during the construction of their respective masterpieces.
