10Matera – The Subterranean City

Located in the southern region of Basilicata, Matera is a city like no other. Carved into the rugged cliffs of a deep ravine, Matera’s ancient cave dwellings, known as Sassi, date back thousands of years.

These unique stone structures served as homes, churches, and even movie sets. In recent years, Matera has gained recognition and was named the European Capital of Culture in 2019. Wander through its narrow alleyways and marvel at the remarkable architecture that seems to emerge from the rock itself.
