10Italy – Beautiful, But Increasingly Expensive
Italy is a perennial favourite, but its popularity has created challenges for travellers. Venice, Rome, Florence and the Amalfi Coast attract enormous visitor numbers, particularly during the summer months.
The biggest concern is the combination of high accommodation prices, overcrowded attractions and increasing pressure on historic city centres. Venice has experimented with access fees for certain day visitors, while other destinations have introduced or considered measures to manage tourism.
In addition, extreme summer temperatures can make sightseeing uncomfortable, especially in cities with limited shade.
Why think twice? If you are expecting an inexpensive, peaceful Italian holiday in August, you may be disappointed. Consider travelling in spring or autumn instead.
