9Greece – Heatwaves and Island Overcrowding
Greece offers some of Europe’s most spectacular beaches, archaeological sites and island landscapes. Nevertheless, its most famous destinations face growing seasonal pressure.
Santorini and Mykonos are particularly popular, with cruise ship arrivals and concentrated summer tourism creating crowded conditions. Accommodation and restaurant prices can also be considerably higher than visitors expect.
Extreme heat is another factor. During particularly severe heatwaves, outdoor attractions may face temporary restrictions, and wildfire risks can increase in dry regions.
Why think twice? If your ideal holiday involves quiet beaches and affordable accommodation, reconsider visiting the most famous islands during July and August. Less crowded islands and shoulder-season travel can offer a better experience.
