Few beaches in Europe are as strange as Playa de Gulpiyuri. Located near Llanes in Asturias, this tiny sandy cove sits inland rather than directly beside the open sea. The Cantabrian water reaches it through underground passages created by the surrounding limestone.
The result looks almost impossible: a little beach surrounded by green fields, with no ocean horizon in sight. The beach is only around 40 metres long and has been protected as a Natural Monument since 2001. Access is on foot, and checking the tides before visiting is important because the appearance and amount of water can change considerably.
