10U.S. Route 50 – Nevada (The Loneliest Road in America)
Nicknamed “The Loneliest Road in America” by Life magazine in 1986, Nevada’s stretch of U.S. Route 50 is as remote as it gets. This 400-mile route traverses the entire width of the state, passing through desert basins, mountain ranges, and ghost towns.
With sparse towns and limited amenities, the route offers an otherworldly isolation. Visitors pass through Austin and Ely, former mining boomtowns, before reaching Great Basin National Park. Make sure to bring extra fuel, as gas stations are few and far between.
