2San Millán Yuso and Suso Monasteries (La Rioja)

Less famous than Spain’s larger monuments but no less important, the monasteries of San Millán de la Cogolla hold a special place in history. Nestled in the La Rioja region, they are recognized as the birthplace of the Spanish language.
The Glosas Emilianenses, annotations written here in the 10th century, are considered the earliest written examples of Castilian. Architecturally, the monasteries showcase Romanesque and Baroque styles, while their setting in a serene valley adds to their appeal. For lovers of history and language, this site is a pilgrimage in its own right.
