1Cuenca, Spain

Cuenca, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a medieval town in central Spain dramatically perched on the cliffs between two river gorges, the Júcar and the Huécar.

Known for its casas colgadas, or “hanging houses,” Cuenca’s historic buildings seem to cling precariously to the cliff’s edge.

These ancient houses, some dating back to the 14th century, extend over the gorge, creating an incredible visual effect. The town also boasts a beautiful cathedral, narrow cobbled streets, and a lively arts scene, with some hanging houses now serving as galleries and museums.
