9Son Doong Cave, Vietnam
Hidden in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, Son Doong is often described as one of the world’s most extraordinary caves. Its scale is difficult to comprehend: the cave contains enormous passages, underground rivers and chambers large enough to accommodate what feels like an entire landscape.
Sunlight enters through collapsed sections of the ceiling, allowing vegetation to grow deep underground. Clouds can even form inside the cave because of its unusual microclimate.
Visiting Son Doong is not a conventional sightseeing experience. Expeditions require trekking through rugged terrain and are limited, making the journey part of the adventure.
