6Solvay Hut (Switzerland)

Perched high on the Matterhorn at 13,133 feet above sea level, Solvay Hut is the highest mountain hut in the Alps.

It’s primarily used as an emergency shelter for mountaineers attempting to summit the peak. While its location offers jaw-dropping views, it also comes with the inherent dangers of extreme isolation in some of the harshest conditions on earth.

Why it’s lonely: At such high altitudes, surrounded by nothing but snow, ice, and jagged peaks, it’s the very definition of isolation.
