1 Laugavegur Trail – Iceland

Iceland’s Laugavegur Trail is renowned for its otherworldly landscapes, which seem more fitting for a sci-fi movie than a traditional hiking trail. This 34-mile trek takes hikers through some of the most geologically active and visually stunning areas of the country. From colorful rhyolite mountains and steaming geothermal vents to black sand deserts and lush green valleys, the variety of landscapes is astounding.

The hike begins in Landmannalaugar, an area known for its hot springs and colorful mountains, and ends in Þórsmörk, a verdant valley surrounded by glaciers and volcanoes. Along the way, hikers pass through the Alftavatn Lake and the Emstrur Desert, experiencing the raw, untamed beauty of Iceland’s wilderness.
