2Pyrgi, Chios

The island of Chios is mostly known for its famous mastic-producing trees, but it also features a hidden treasure in the village of Pyrgi, a 25-kilometer (15.5-mile) drive from the main town.

The geometrical hand-painted designs, known as “xysta,” that adorn the façades of the buildings add a strong architectural interest to this medieval village.
