6The Pope’s Ring Is Destroyed

One of the most symbolic acts following the pope’s death is the destruction of the Fisherman’s Ring. This gold ring, engraved with the image of St. Peter fishing, is unique to each pope and used to seal official documents. Its destruction prevents fraudulent use and formally marks the end of that pontificate.

The Camerlengo oversees this ritual, usually breaking the ring in two with a ceremonial silver hammer.
