10Commission and Controversy

Commissioned by Pope Clement VII in 1534 and completed in 1541 under Pope Paul III, “The Last Judgment” was Michelangelo’s response to the religious fervor of the time.

However, its unveiling was not without controversy. The nudity depicted in the artwork stirred intense debate among religious authorities, leading to later alterations by other artists to cover some of the figures.
