5The Birth of Modern Italy

Italy as we know it today was once a patchwork of independent states and kingdoms.

The process of unification, known as the Risorgimento, began in the 19th century. Giuseppe Garibaldi, along with other notable figures like Count Cavour and Victor Emmanuel II, played pivotal roles in this journey to unify the Italian peninsula. In 1861, the Kingdom of Italy was officially established, marking a significant turning point in the nation’s history.
