8Basilica of San Clemente

The Basilica of San Clemente is a remarkable site that often escapes the typical tourist itinerary. This church is a living archaeological record, with three levels representing different historical periods.

The present basilica, dating back to the 12th century, sits atop a 4th-century church, which in turn was built over a 1st-century Roman house and Mithraic temple. Visitors can explore these subterranean layers, each offering a glimpse into Rome’s evolving history and the adaptation of religious sites over centuries.
