8The Rose Garden and San Miniato al Monte

While most visitors climb up to Piazzale Michelangelo for the panoramic postcard view of Florence, few venture just a little higher to San Miniato al Monte, one of the city’s most beautiful Romanesque churches. Its black-and-white marble façade gleams in the sun, while inside, frescoes and mosaics create a hushed, spiritual atmosphere. From its terrace, the view over Florence is even more striking than Michelangelo’s square, with fewer crowds.

On the way up, pause at the Rose Garden, a terraced park filled with fragrant roses and whimsical sculptures by Belgian artist Jean-Michel Folon. It’s a peaceful spot to rest with a picnic, surrounded by greenery, while the dome of the Duomo rises in the distance.
