After the defeat of Napoleon by British forces in 1801, the Rosetta Stone, along with other Egyptian antiquities, was surrendered to the British under the terms of the Treaty of Alexandria.

The stone arrived in England in 1802 and, in 1802, found its permanent home at the British Museum in London, where it remains one of its most iconic exhibits.
