10Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Bavaria

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is probably one of Germany’s most recognizable small towns, and it is easy to understand why. Located along the Romantic Road in Bavaria, its historic center is packed with colorful half-timbered houses, towers, fountains, and narrow cobblestone streets.

The famous Plönlein, with its yellow half-timbered house and medieval towers, has become an iconic German travel image. Walking through Rothenburg can feel like stepping into a storybook, particularly early in the morning when the streets are quieter.

Don’t miss the medieval town walls, which provide wonderful views over the rooftops and surrounding countryside.
