8Visit Achilleion Palace

The beautiful Achilleion Palace was built in the 1800s by Bavarian Empress Elisabeth, a beautiful aristocrat known as Sisi, the sad Queen, who would holiday on the island. Sadly, Elisabeth was murdered in 1898 on a trip to Switzerland. The palace fell into the hands of the King of Greece who sold it to Kaiser William II.

During the First World War, the palace was used as a military headquarters by the French and Serbian armies. It was severely damaged during the war and fell into ruin. The neoclassical building was eventually restored and became a museum housing numerous works of art including magnificent statues and is surrounded by wonderful gardens.
