5Panforte: Siena’s Dense Delight

Originating in Siena, panforte is a dense, spiced bread that dates back to the Middle Ages. Its name means “strong bread,” referencing its bold flavors, which come from honey, nuts, dried fruits, and spices like cinnamon and cloves. Panforte was once considered a luxury item, reserved for the wealthy or as an offering to monasteries.

Regional Variations:
Siena’s traditional “Panforte di Siena IGP” is protected by geographical indication, ensuring it’s made to exacting standards. Variations include chocolate-covered versions and those with a lighter, sweeter flavor. Panforte is typically served in thin slices with a glass of Vin Santo, Tuscany’s famous dessert wine.
