The island contains many Orthodox Christian churches as well as monasteries, the largest of which is Panagia Spiliani that is next to a medieval castle built by the Knights Hospitalier in the 14th century.

Travelers may want to try the traditional island drink, soumada, which tastes like almonds and is non-alcoholic.
