9Stonehenge – Wiltshire, England

Stonehenge is one of the most iconic prehistoric monuments in the world, but seeing it in person can be underwhelming.

Located in the middle of a field, the ancient stone circle is roped off, meaning you can’t get close to it. The surrounding area is also quite barren, and the stones themselves may not appear as massive or awe-inspiring as you might imagine. Add to this the long lines of tourists and the general lack of amenities nearby, and Stonehenge may feel less mystical than expected.

Why It Might Disappoint:

  • The stones are smaller than many anticipate.
  • Visitors are kept at a distance, which diminishes the experience.
