3St. Peter’s Square’s Elliptical Design
St. Peter’s Square, the grand open space in front of the basilica, was designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
What makes this space particularly interesting is its elliptical shape. The colonnade surrounding the square consists of four rows of columns, creating the illusion of embracing the visitors in a maternal hug as they approach the basilica. The design is symbolic of the Catholic Church’s openness and hospitality, welcoming people from all directions into the spiritual heart of Christianity.
