This beautiful treasure’s significance is not known widely to those outside of the Catholic Church. The door is one of the entrances to the Basilica and is intricately decorated with scenes in gold. However, with all of the opulent gold ornamentation in the Basilica, you could easily miss it.
It is only opened by the Pope on jubilee years which do not come around very often. If you planned on just sneaking through you will be sadly disappointed. The doors are walled up from the inside so that they are unable to be opened. For the lucky people who were in Rome in 2015, Pope Francis broke with tradition and opened the doors for a special Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy but do not count on this happening again anytime soon!
