3Russia–Alaska Border: Diomede Islands

The Russia-Alaska border in the Bering Strait is one of the world’s most remote and intriguing boundaries.

Here, the two Diomede Islands—Big Diomede (Russia) and Little Diomede (USA)—sit just 2.4 miles apart.
However, the International Date Line runs between them, meaning they are separated by a 21-hour time difference. During winter, the frozen sea sometimes creates a natural ice bridge, adding to the border’s mystique.
