Built by Sarah Winchester, heiress to the Winchester rifle fortune, the sprawling mansion has staircases leading to ceilings, doors opening into walls, and rooms with no apparent purpose. Believing she was haunted by the spirits of those killed by Winchester rifles, Sarah built the house nonstop for 38 years in an attempt to appease them—or confuse them.
