Only 40 minutes from Rome by train or car, Tivoli is an easy getaway that feels worlds away from the capital’s buzz. 

This hillside town was once the retreat of Roman emperors, and it still exudes elegance. The spectacular Villa d’Este, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is famed for its Renaissance gardens, fountains, and water displays that seem to dance under the sunlight. Nearby, Hadrian’s Villa (Villa Adriana) showcases the grandeur of ancient Rome with sprawling ruins, pools, and marble statues. Tivoli’s charming old town, filled with cozy trattorias, makes the perfect stop for lunch before heading back to Rome.
