5University of Paris (c. 1150, Paris, France)
Often associated with the Sorbonne, the University of Paris emerged around 1150 as one of Europe’s great centers of medieval learning. It became famous for philosophy and theology and helped define the intellectual climate of the Middle Ages.
Although the original institution was reorganized centuries later, its legacy lives on through modern universities in Paris. The academic model it helped establish influenced higher education systems across Europe.
