Deep beneath the Chihuahuan Desert in New Mexico, Carlsbad Caverns is one of the most spectacular cave systems in the United States. Its enormous underground chambers contain an astonishing variety of formations.
The Big Room is the most famous section, covering an area so large that visitors can spend considerable time walking through it. Stalactites, stalagmites, columns and other formations create an impressive underground landscape.
The cave is also famous for its bat population. During warmer months, thousands of bats leave the cave around sunset, creating another remarkable natural spectacle above ground.
