Forget Amsterdam’s canals for a moment and head northeast to Giethoorn. This enchanting Dutch village is famous for its waterways, tiny bridges and traditional houses surrounded by gardens.
Parts of the historic village are remarkably quiet, with canals replacing conventional streets in some areas. Small boats glide past thatched-roof homes while wooden bridges connect paths on either side of the water.
Giethoorn is sometimes called the “Dutch Venice,” but the comparison almost undersells its character. Its peaceful atmosphere is completely different from the bustle of a major European city.
