3Preparations for the Conclave
The word conclave comes from the Latin cum clave, meaning “with a key.” This refers to the tradition of locking cardinals inside the Sistine Chapel until a new pope is elected.
Before the conclave begins, the cardinals hold General Congregations—daily meetings where they reflect, pray, and discuss the needs of the Church. These discussions often shape the direction of the papal election. Conclave logistics are tightly controlled. Cardinals are sequestered in the Vatican’s Domus Sanctae Marthae guesthouse and transported to the Sistine Chapel under strict confidentiality. No communication with the outside world is allowed.
