The whole medieval city center of York is surrounded by ramparts that protect it from the invader. The famous “Robin Hood’s Tower”is to the North.

The Romans built the first ramparts in the 5th century but these were destroyed by the Vikings and rebuilt in the 12th century in the form that we know today.
