6Pampapato: Ferrara’s Spiced Treasure

Pampapato, also known as panpepato, is a festive sweet bread from Ferrara that exudes medieval charm. Its name means “peppered bread,” a nod to the warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and black pepper that flavor the dough. Enriched with honey, almonds, candied citrus, and dark chocolate, this dense bread has a unique and luxurious taste.

Historical Roots:
Pampapato originated in Ferrara’s monasteries during the Renaissance, where it was made as a special offering to the Pope. This connection earned it the alternative name “Pangiallo” (Golden Bread) in some regions. Today, pampapato is often covered in a chocolate glaze, making it a decadent choice for holiday feasts. It pairs beautifully with dessert wines or coffee.
