7Pandoro: The Star of Verona

Hailing from Verona, pandoro (literally “golden bread”) is another Christmas favorite. Unlike the fruit-laden panettone, pandoro is simpler, focusing on a rich, buttery flavor and a soft, fluffy texture. Its star-shaped form, dusted generously with powdered sugar, mimics the snowy peaks of the Italian Alps.

Historical Significance:
Pandoro has roots in the Venetian Republic, where it was served to nobles and the wealthy. Its golden hue comes from the eggs used in the dough, symbolizing prosperity and luxury. Pandoro is often sliced horizontally, creating layers that can be filled with whipped cream or Nutella. For purists, a warm slice with a dusting of sugar is more than enough to capture its charm.
