1Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay

Located on the northern bank of the Río de la Plata, Colonia del Sacramento is one of Uruguay’s oldest towns, founded by the Portuguese in 1680.

Its well-preserved historic quarter, the Barrio Histórico, is a charming maze of cobblestone streets and colonial buildings that reflect a mix of Portuguese, Spanish, and post-colonial styles. Due to its strategic position, Colonia changed hands between Spain and Portugal multiple times, which is reflected in its unique architecture. The town’s rich history earned it UNESCO World Heritage status in 1995.
