If you’re fortunate enough to visit Siena on July 2nd or August 16th, don’t miss the Palio, a thrilling horse race dating back to the 17th century. 

Ten jockeys ride bareback around the Piazza del Campo, representing their respective contrade (neighborhoods). The atmosphere is electric as locals passionately cheer for their contrada to win the coveted banner.
