2The Standard of Ur

From the ancient city of Ur in Mesopotamia (modern Iraq), the Standard of Ur dates back to around 2600 BC. This wooden box, inlaid with lapis lazuli, shell, and red limestone, depicts scenes of war on one side and peace on the other.

It’s a miniature masterpiece that tells one of the earliest visual stories of civilization—how humans organized themselves, celebrated victory, and honored their leaders. The craftsmanship and vivid storytelling make it one of the most remarkable surviving artworks from the ancient world.
