3The Most Famous Mask Was Designed to Silence the Wearer

One of the most iconic carnival masks, the Bauta, is instantly recognizable by its angular chin and white surface. But its design served a very specific purpose.

The Bauta mask altered the wearer’s voice, making it deeper and harder to identify. This allowed people to speak anonymously, vote secretly in political assemblies, and conduct confidential dealings without revealing their identity.

Unlike decorative masks, the Bauta was worn with a black cloak and tricorn hat, creating a uniform that stripped away individuality — a striking reminder that carnival anonymity was as much about control as it was about freedom.
